Frequently asked questions

These FAQs address the most common and practical questions we’re asked about how life planning works, who it’s for, and what you can expect from working with us.

If your question isn’t answered here, or you’d like to talk through your own situation, you’re very welcome to get in touch at howard@howardnowell.com

Life planning can raise important questions — especially if you’re used to traditional financial advice.

What exactly happens in a first session of life planning?

The first session is vital to the success of the programme. Its primary purpose is to establish trust, openness, and a strong working connection within the group.

The format, boundaries, and principles of the course are clearly explained. It is made explicit that no private, confidential, or sensitive financial information is ever shared in the group environment.

Before joining, all prospective participants are encouraged to meet with Howard - either in person or via Zoom - to discuss the programme, expectations, and ensure it is the right fit.

Following the first session, participants can decide whether the programme is right for them. If they choose not to continue, a full refund is provided.

How much does each programme or membership cost?

The group version of the GAME Plan costs £495.00.  This includes 12-hour long sessions, workbooks, recordings and ongoing support throughout the course. Each course typically consists of 4-6 people.

The 1-2-1 sessions are priced at £2,495.00 for the 12 sessions. This option allows for deeper, more tailored discussion and more in person meetings - depending on the client's location and preferences.

How long does the life planning process take from start to finish?

The standard Group course lasts 12 sessions which is delivered over approximately three months.  Occasionally,  the formal framework maybe paused for reflection, homework or other commitments. 1-2-1 clients can choose to work at a similar pace or on a fully tailored timetable to suit their circumstances.

What tools and resources do members get access to?

Participants receive full access to all study materials, including a workbook, PowerPoint slides, recordings and email and phone support throughout the course. These resources are designed to support both in-session learning and practical application between sessions.

Who is life planning best suited for?

There is no single "typical "Life Planning client. Clients have ranged in age from 30 to their mid-60's.  The programme's flexible and interactive format adapts to individual objectives and allows personal GAME Plans to be designed and implemented. Clients are often motivated by imminent or significant life changes, such as marriage, upcoming retirement, divorce, career change or charitable ambitions.  The majority of clients are looking for a catalyst for new direction and inspiration, supported by a structured framework with proven success.

Can I just use the tools myself without coaching?

At present there isn't a "self-serve" version of the Activation GAME Plan.  We are working on a version for this format but feedback from previous participants consistently highlights that the weekly format and the motivation from the group interaction is a significant factor in the successful completion. The coaching element plays a key role in maintaining momentum, motivation and implementation.

What’s the difference between life planning and traditional financial advice?

The key difference is that Life Planning starts with your Life not your Money

Before focusing on finances, Life Planning helps you clarify what truly matters to you and your family - how you want to spend your time, energy, and attention, both now and in the future. Only once this clarity is established do we explore the financial means required to support those goals.

Traditional financial advice typically focuses on financial capital and the management of assets. Life Planning places equal importance on human capital- your skills, values, relationships, health, and potential.

Importantly, Life Planning does not involve the sale of financial products.

What results can I realistically expect from life planning?

By engaging fully with the programme and applying the tools and techniques provided, clients typically gain:

  • Greater clarity, purpose, and direction

  • Increased confidence in decision-making

  • A repeatable framework for navigating future change

  • Practical tools to support implementation and execution

The aim is not short-term motivation, but sustainable progress and long-term control over the direction of your life.

How do you measure progress during the life planning programme?

Each client will experience personal moments of clarity, realisation and motivation during the programme. The interactive exercises flush out, long-standing, deep rooted goals, values and strengths.

These insights form the foundation for meaningful changes to habits, behaviours, and actions, allowing progress to be measured through increased alignment, confidence, and purposeful steps towards a Life with purpose.

Do I have to commit to a 12 week course?

The full benefit of the Activation Game Plan is delivered over 12 weeks.  However, everybody is different and personalised approaches as well as one off taster session are encouraged.

I already have a Financial Advisor can we I still work with you?

Yes of course. Life Planning is one aspect of your overall Financial requirements and in many instances can facilitate a greater appreciation of financial tools and potentially products that maybe required.  Howard is very happy to discuss this aspect in more detail.

Is Howard Nowell Life Planning regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)?

No, Howard Nowell Life Planning Ltd provides "educational financial services" and is not regulated by the FCA but falls under general consumer laws in the UK.
